01 / THE CHALLENGE

The problem with gaming content at scale

The problem with gaming content at scale

Gaming YouTube in 2018 ran on a simple formula: stream gameplay, upload daily, grow through volume. BRKsEDU was already a major channel, but the content was almost entirely gameplay sessions. High output, short shelf life. A video would spike on upload day and disappear from the algorithm within 48 hours.

The question we started asking: what if we made content that kept working after the first week?

I led the introduction of a new content format: structured, editorial, documentary-style videos. Instead of recording a single playthrough, we built:

01

Curated selection series

The best games by genre, ranked by category.

02

Historical guides

Deep dives into console generations: SNES, Mega Drive, PC Engine.

03

Retrospective journeys

Revisiting gaming history through a structured narrative lens.

04

What Is…

A collection of videos exploring and analyzing a variety of games.

This wasn’t just an aesthetic choice. It was a bet on a different kind of discovery: content people search for, not just subscribe for.

What the numbers said

Standard gameplay content averaged 25% retention. These editorial formats produced a different result, with both strong retention and long-tail reach.

05 / THE CONTROL TEST

Was it the format, or just the audience?

Was it the format, or just the audience?

A fair objection: perhaps these videos worked only because BRKsEDU was already a large channel. So we adapted the same editorial idea into English and launched the "Video Game Showcase" channel from zero, without promoting it to BRKsEDU’s existing fanbase.

The same format, adapted for another language, found viewers without a built-in subscriber base or cross-promotion.

What this means for social content at Circle

The lesson from BRKsEDU isn’t specific to gaming. It’s about the difference between content that performs once and content that compounds. The formats that worked shared three things:

The lesson from BRKsEDU isn’t specific to gaming. It’s about the difference between content that performs once and content that compounds. The formats that worked shared three things:

01 / EDITORIAL STANCE

A clear point of view

A specific angle gives people a reason to choose one story over another.

02 / VIEWER EXPERIENCE

Structure and pace that increased retention

Intentional structure turns an initial click into meaningful watch time.

03 / COMPOUNDING REACH

Discovery-first distribution

Design for people who have never heard of you, and let discovery continue after launch.

That’s the same thinking I’d bring to Circle’s social content: building formats that earn reach beyond the existing audience, rather than simply serving the followers you already have. Creating content that people don’t just click on, but genuinely care about.
